Transformative design begins with understanding the needs of users. When we worked with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) on their website redesign, getting to know their members was our first priority. We sat down with fire fighters and paramedics at the IAFF Health & Safety Symposium and learned about their work, information needs, and frustrations with finding content. These insights shaped our redesign strategy, and let us build a site that looks great and meets its users’ unique needs. Viget’s redesign of the IAFF website went on to earn multiple w3 awards, including Gold for Best User Experience. As we reflect on this win and look ahead to future projects, the value of a user-centered approach is clear. We’re inspired to continue designing with empathy, purpose, and impact in 2025 and beyond.

The Shape of Interviews

“Imagine the interviewer and the interviewee sharing a vehicle to navigate this anthill. As interviewers, we sit in the passenger seat. All we can do is suggest where to go next, with prompts and questions. All that we see, outside of contextual observation and field interviews, is what the interviewee decides to show us.”
